In the book of Colossians, Paul is writing to the church at Colossae after hearing that they were battling a heresy within the church. False teachers were denigrating Christ and claiming that He was not actually God. Even today, while many people in our culture might think it’s okay to believe the good teachings of Jesus while denying any of the theological claims He made, we see very clearly in God’s word that you cannot have one without the other. Jesus’ power and authority is derived from His divinity, and we are called to live differently because of it.
